Handwashing: It’s easier said than done. Perhaps during elementary school we did not learn the proper way to clean our hands and never corrected ourselves. Here are some easy steps you can follow to assure you get all that grime and dirt off your hands.
Wet your hands all over before applying soap.
Lather your wet hands and scrub the surfaces and in between the crevices of your fingers and nails. Scrub for about 20 seconds ( as long as it takes to sing “Happy Birthday”).
Rinse off the soap and trapped germs until all the suds disappear down the drain.
Dry off your rinsed hands with a towel (cloth or paper) until no longer wet.
Wear gloves: In most instances, food can get contaminated because handlers don’t wear gloves.
I will be the first to say that I don’t want my sandwich at Subway to be assembled by bare hands
(especially if I have food sensitivities). Be sure when you do wear gloves to change them often to
avoid cross contamination or gradual accumulation of germs.
Sanitize equipment: Just like doctors must sanitize operation tools, food handlers must also wash and sanitize serving utensils and food preparation equipment. This helps to avoid cross-contamination or consuming old food remnants.
Avoid contact: Try not to touch your face or other areas of your body. If you do, remove and replace your gloves or wash your hands really well afterwards.
