Fast food joints are everywhere! Just take a look around and notice the number of places that make food easily accessible without spending too much time. Most of us, whether we are employees, students, teachers, or travelers, don’t have any free time to gather raw ingredients and prepare a hearty, healthy meal for ourselves. It’s a grab-and-go world out there! What we may not realize is how this is affecting both our economic and physical health as a society. Most fast food joints offer cheap, high demand items such as burgers, fries, milkshakes, pizza and other food items, though they are inexpensive and popular, are high in calories and very low in nutrients.
Sure, it can be nice to have a convenient, tasty meal every now and then, but doing so every day will eventually add up and make a noticeable difference. A consistent habit of eating fast food can cause weight gain, weariness, irregular blood sugar, irritability, difficulty thinking, and other health complications. This is due to consuming excessive amounts of foods high in saturated fat, processed sugars, sodium, and added preservatives.
That’s not to say we don’t pay any mind to our health status. Many people are very health conscious and want to make the right decisions related to nutrition and fitness, but they may just lack the proper education and resources. However, when it comes to health, all things come with a price. This may mean sacrificing a little more time and money than we prefer, but it is definitely worth it! A good daily intake of home-cooked meals full of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein will keep you feeling energetic, healthy, strong, and happy!
But what if you don’t like to cook? What if you don’t know how and don’t have time to learn? Now, you don’t have to be a master chef to be good in the kitchen. There are plenty of easy recipes to look up online or in magazines that aren’t super complex. Many great healthy recipes have less than 5 simple ingredients and can take only 15 minutes to prepare.
Rather than picking up a fast food meal, try packing a lunch the night before or assembling a breakfast beforehand so that when you wake up in the morning, you can just grab it from the fridge and head out the door. Overnight oats, crockpot quinoa, or a yogurt parfait are some good, healthy options that take just a few minutes to prepare and still taste amazing!
