Water is an actual nutrient that your body needs. Water maintains the balance of body fluids, energizes muscles, helps keep skin healthy, and even helps control calorie intake. Each day we lose water continuously through breathing, sweating, skin evaporation, and waste. Fluid losses are accentuated in warmer climates, higher altitudes, during strenuous exercise, and in older adults because their sense of thirst may not be as sharp. When our input does not equal our output, we can become dehydrated. Multiple studies have showed that a lack of sufficient hydration is the number one trigger for daytime fatigue and can mistakenly be recognized as hunger. Being properly hydrated throughout the day is essential for energy, smart eating habits, and overall good health.
